National Water Polo Victory
Congratulations to the Men’s Senior Water Polo Team for their fantastic 10th win in 13 seasons in the National League Division 1 Championship. See over for more details and a photo of the victorious team.
Salford Open Meet
If anyone is still expecting to receive an award from this meet, please let either the desk or Jane have details of the name, age group and race as soon as possible.
Open Meet Information
The asa North West have asked all Clubs to remind swimmers entering Open Meets that all entry times for all meets are checked. This is particularly important when entering competitions where a fastest time limit is set (when speeding tickets may be issued). Some swimmers from some Clubs are entering even though they have faster personal bests, thereby preventing other swimmers from competing. If your personal best is faster, you need to look for a different meet.
Speedo League
Following some very tight finishes over the series of races, the top eight Clubs will compete on 13 December. Unfortunately, Lancaster finished 9th this time so will not be taking part but we should like to thank all swimmers who took part and we are looking forward to the Micro and Sub Leagues starting in the Spring.
Car Parking
There has been an incidence of vandalism in the car park recently when the owner’s car was parked in the staff car park. The lighting has since been improved but please keep your eyes open!
Registers
The Club would like to thank all those who have responded so well to our request for emergency contact details if you need to leave your child unaccompanied – it makes life so much easier.
International Youth Games
The Club is saddened to learn of the Council’s decision not to go ahead with the Lancaster Games in 2009, breaking a connection with the Club which goes back to the early 1960s. Many thanks to all those of you who had already offered to host or officiate.
Open Meets Just Gone
Congratulations to all the swimmers who took part in the Blackpool and Ulverston Open Meets - Lots of medals and speeding tickets! Very few disqualifications!
Welcome back after the summer holidays!
Everyone should now have settled into their new groups. Here are some things to remember:
-
Please register with the desk before entering the water – Seniors too please!
-
Always bring a drink with a sports cap so that you do not get dehydrated.
-
If you need medication (for example an asthma inhaler) make sure that you always have it with you and that your coach knows that you might need it.
-
Please remove earrings and other jewellery before swimming.
-
Clear your belongings from the changing cubicles and either lock them in a locker or give them to your parents to look after.
-
Enjoy yourself!
Swimming Competitions
Keep your eye on the notice board for details of any Open Meets coming up. For an Open Meet, you will need to complete an entry form and make a payment. These are a good opportunity to swim against other swimmers of your own age from other clubs - please feel free to ask your coach if you are unsure whether to enter. It is usually parents’ responsibility to get their child to the Open Meet but a coach will be poolside to organise the children.
Also keep your eye on the board to check for League team selections – you must let your coach know if you are unable to attend so that someone else can be given the opportunity and so that a full relay team can swim. For League matches, you are a representing the Club and a bus will take you to and from the venue. Parents can usually travel on the bus, but you will need to check with the Club desk to ensure there is a seat available and to confirm where you will be catching the bus.
Club Gala – the Club usually holds two internal galas in the year in July and December – there is a nominal entry fee and the chance to race against your team mates. Everyone is encouraged to enter as it is also a great opportunity to check your progress by being timed. More details coming soon.
Water Polo
U16 - have won all their games and are now through to the semi-finals – well done!
Senior Team - set a new record for goals scored in one game in the National Water Polo League (NWPL) by scoring 38 against Portobello. Lancaster sit top of the League with a 100% record. All NWPL news can be found on the Club website.
GB Squad - many congratulations to Decland Ellwood, Elliot Trafford and Stefan Detko for their selection to the 93/4 GB Squad. Congratulations also to Zak Sly who will be the goalkeeping coach for the squad.
European Championships - Lancaster was represented in the GB Junior Men by James Wannop, Glen Robinson and Ciaran James; the team came 13th. GB Junior Ladies came 7th with Rebecca Benson, Briony Rutledge and Beckie Kershaw from Lancaster.
Poolside Helpers
Everyone you see working on poolside is a volunteer, from the people on the desk to the people coaching. We always need more people and are presently looking for Poolside Helpers. If you are over 14 and interested in helping poolside under the guidance of a coach, please leave your details at the Club desk. It is great fun!
International Youth Games Team Rendsburg 2008
On 27 July 2008, the team set out with two leaders for Rendsburg in Germany where they would be competing in the International Youth Games which is held every year with our twin towns. To qualify, the swimmers have to live, or be educated, within the Lancaster City Council area; be within the age range and be selected by their swimming coach, usually through times and dedication to training.
In Rendsburg, we stayed in host families, spread over quite a large area but centred on their fabulous 50m outdoor pool (they have a 25m indoor pool too!). None of our swimmers had ever swum in such a pool and the back-strokers were concerned as there were no lines to follow on the ceiling! After a tiring journey, we arrived at midnight and went home with our new family where everyone quickly settled in, trying out our German even though everyone spoke English.
On the Monday we had training then enjoyed the opening ceremony with teams from Denmark, Holland, Sweden, France, Estonia, Poland and Germany. We had had quite a successful time in Aalborg, Denmark in 2007 with a total of 10 medals from a very young team so we were hoping for a few medals this year too.
Over two full days of competition and in two age groups, the team achieved an amazing 48 personal best swims (from 69 events) and 13 Gold, 10 Silver and 13 Bronze medals. A fantastic performance from a great team who once again showed the way in supporting their fellow competitors and who are truly a credit to their families and clubs in their team spirit, behaviour and dedication to their sport.
The team and the leaders have been invited to a reception with the mayor at the Town Hall on 20 October. We should like to thank S Akister Ltd for their shirt sponsorship.
The International Youth Games will take place in Lancaster next year. If you are interested in hosting a visiting athlete, please leave your details with the Club Desk or contact dowen@lancaster.gov.uk.
